What are you currently reading?

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison.

Where is your favorite place to read?

On the sofa in my office with a cup of coffee, a blanket, and my dog sleeping on my feet.

What is your favorite thing you've written? Book or otherwise!

My favorite thing is usually the more recent thing, and right now that's the sequel to Black Sun

What's your favorite book by someone other than yourself?

I don't have just one favorite. It really depends on my mood. But I recently loved Circe by Madeline Miller.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? And/or how did you become a writer?

I've been writing since I was in 3rd grade, but I think I really caught the bug in 7th grade when I turned a science report into a short story. I've written for pleasure all through my life but only got serious about becoming a professional writer a few years ago. I had never seen writers in genre who looked like me, so I didn't know it was even an option.

If you could give one piece of advice to an aspiring writer, what would it be?

Don't worry about trends or what's popular/not popular. Just write the story you want to write, the one that speaks to you, that captures all your weirdness and unique viewpoints. That's the story that will matter.

What is your favorite thing about winter?

Snow! It's a snowy day here today and I love it. I equally love being inside in front of a roaring fire with a book while it's snowing outside!

What does "Books Like Us" mean to you?

That everyone can find a book that they feel speaks to their experience and knows their heart.

And that’s a wrap for our #WinterRead2021 Author Spotlight series! Thank you to Simon & Schuster and to all of the libraries & schools who participated this year. Way to go!
